NOTE: Mild spoilers for Star Trek StarFleet Academy ahead; more vibe than plot points

Last night I got to see the Aurora Australis, meaning I have now seen both the Northern and Southern lights. I know the physics and the science behind them and yet that makes no difference to the way it feels, the way it moved me to see them.

Life has been that odd combination of busy and boring, so much to do but nothing to note so having a moment or two out of time to simply be, to feel the awesome grandeur of the universe and to simply occupy my little part of it for a moment was truly meaningful.

Last week the car died, a death of old age and use; it is a bad sign when the towie (tow truck driver) can diagnose the car as soon as he pulls up because the engine is known to give out at 300k of use. We have arranged a new (to us) cart that I will be picking up tomorrow.

By the end of the month I will be back in Bangkok; I am trying to approach it with as much joy as possible but there is a part of me that will very much miss my comfy bedroom that has slowly become my space over the last few months; and of course miss access to my PC and all my family.

The bulk of my time in this coming trip will be spent alone; unless one counts the cats who, while good for a hug are not the greatest conversationalists. I am hoping to be able to engage a bit more in the culture while I am there and to use the time for self improvement and growth.

On the plus side of course is the food; I am looking forward to being able to get Faun Taun again; which defies reasonable expectation but is something like a fusion of sushi and a kebab but in an amazing way.

I am also looking forward to watching more of Starfleet academy, which of course I could do anywhere but will be in Bangkok during its release. I see why so many people are whining about it.

Said people are, in my opinion, missing the fucking point of Star Trek.

The whole nonsense about it breaking canon is both absurd on the face of it, after all remember that Lower Decks is considered canon so there is a fucking all knowing Koala that is responsible for ushers the souls of Federation officers back to life, and factually inaccurate.

More than that Starfleet academy is the Star Trek we need right now; the work of rebuilding a new and better future, learning from the past but not falling into the trap of trying to recreate something whose time has passed and perhaps more importantly not idealising an imperfect past but rather embracing anew the ideals it was built on.

As we face, in the words of a different Rodenberry creation, The Long Night I think that is the most important message of hope we can have. Hope, and a roadmap.
